FRES Uganda Launches Innovative Mini-Grid Project with Vittoria Technology and Avsi Foundation to Electrify Dairy Cooperatives and Surrounding Communities
Exciting news! Together with partners Vittoria Technology and Avsi Foundation we are launching a new mini grid project in Uganda, financed by EEP Africa. This initiative marks FRES’ first entry into the mini-grids market in Uganda, where we will employ an innovative approach that synergizes our “Energy-as-a-Service” model with Vittoria Technology’s Battery Bank Africa (BBA) “Storage-as-a-Service,” alongside community capacity building provided by Avsi Foundation.
The project will focus on three dairy cooperatives located in South Western Uganda, where we will initially install solar PV and battery systems to provide clean, affordable energy to these cooperatives, serving as anchor loads. Following this we will build out the mini-grid infrastructure around the cooperatives to electrify the surrounding households and businesses. Alongside this phased and modular expansion AVSI will engage with the communities to build the awareness and skills to fully utilize the opportunities enabled by the electrification.
The project uses a mini-grid model based on phased growth, using modular financing and technology, enabled by BBA, to provide reliable and affordable system growth alongside demand. This approach allows for smaller, more affordable initial systems that can be upgraded as demand grows, resulting in more sustainable business models for mini-grid operators and clean, affordable electricity for communities. We are excited to embark on this transformative project with our partners and EEP Africa, paving the way for a more sustainable and electrified future!
